Session times are 8.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, with a rotating roster for one 8am start and one 6pm finish per week. Outside surgery hours our patients are currently cared for by third party after hours service. Six of our practice doctors work full time and one works part time. Our practice works on average on 10 minute appointment schedule.

TREATMENT ROOM

Our treatment room consists of 4 consultation beds, including a room designated for minor operations only. All are well equipped including: ECG, Spirometry, Cryo, audiology etc. Our rooms are able to handle minor trauma and we have fully equipped dressings/wound care facilities.

ADMIN SETUP

Our doctors are supported by 5 experienced Medical Receptionists and a Practice Manager. The office has embraced new digital technology which has drastically reduced the movement of documents from reception to doctor and back again. The practice uses Best Practice software and we no longer have paper files within the practice.

NURSING SERVICES

Our doctors are fully supported with 3 RN’s and 1 EEN, all of whom keep up to date with the latest immunisation protocols, wound care etc. 1 RN is also an accredited Cervical Screening nurse. Each doctor that has an allocated minor operation day, also has their designated nurse solely for their use. PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS

Bundaberg region has a population of over 100,000 and the area is becoming more multicultural and cosmopolitan each year. The most common language is spoken is English, but our doctors are fluent in a range of other languages. As our practice is over 90 years old, many generations from one the family have called BMC their family practice. We do have patients with chronic health issues, the majority being diabetes and heart disease. BMC also embraces health needs specific to our indigenous population, LGBT community and Backpacker workers.

BILLING ARRANGEMENTS

Our practice is a discretionary bulk billing practice. For the first visit, all patients are billed a private fee of $66 or above, due to the complexities for seeing a new patient. After this initial fee, concession card holders can be bulk billed at the discretion of the doctor (BB is normally the case). Our standard consultation fee is $66.

PATIENT DEMAND

Burnett Medical Centre has an active patient base of 33,000 people and we continue to add to it at a rate of 9-12 new patients per day. Our appointment schedule currently runs at 10 minute intervals and, depending on the doctor, they may see 5 to 8 patients before a ‘block off’ as catch up time. All doctors have ‘spare on the day appointments’ in order for their regular patients to be seen when ill, which also minimise the risk of a doctor being ‘double booked’ on the day. From 5.30pm to 6pm each week day, we also offer a script only clinic for our regular patients, this frees up the doctors during the day to see patients for other matters.
