Edmonton Family Medical Centre, in the laid back city of Cairns, in tropical North Queensland, is seeking a new permanent General Practitioner to join our Medical Centre.
Having been established in Edmonton for many years we have a very loyal patient base in a thriving local community. Our purpose built medical centre has everything that an incoming doctor would require to provide a high quality of care to their patients.

SURGERY OVERVIEW
Edmonton Family Medical Centre has been caring for the local community for over 30 years. Our practice principal has worked at the practice for the past 20 years. Our practice was re-branded in 2009 and in 2013 we expanded and moved into a new purpose built facility. There is one other General practice in Edmonton and 3 other practices in the surrounding suburbs. The southern suburbs of Cairns are experiencing population growth with new residential development approvals being recently granted. Queensland Health are planning to build Outpatients Hospital services in our suburb.
Our practice is located approximately 15-20 mins drive from Cairns city centre and public and private hospitals. There are 3 shopping centres in close vicinity with one located directly over the road to the practice.
Our practice principal has an interest in sports medicine and is the team doctor for our national basketball team and local rugby league teams. He has also volunteered for the Commonwealth Games and Grand Prix.
We are a training practice for GMT and also take medical students from JCU
SURGERY OWNERSHIP
Our principle doctor and his wife own and manage the surgery.
SURGERY LAYOUT
Edmonton Family Medical Centre has 6 Consulting rooms, 2 interview rooms, a3 bed treatment room and a large procedure room. For our patients we have 2 toilets and a baby change area. We also have a separate staff room/kitchen and staff toilet and shower. Onsite car parking.
SURGERY FACILITIES
Our consulting hours are Monday to Friday: 8am- 5pm and Saturday mornings: 8am-noon.
We have 4-6 Doctors working on an average day and schedule 10 minute appointments. First session is from 8am - 12.00pm, second session from 1.30pm- 5pm. We use Best Practice medical software. Our on line bookings and recalls are through Hotdoc.
TREATMENT ROOM
We have a 3 bed treatment area, separated by privacy curtains, for dressings, injections, baby checks, ECG, lung function tests and minor trauma. A large separate procedure room is available for minor surgical procedures and emergency care. An additional interview room is set aside for for our nurse, care plans and patient audiometry.
ADMIN SETUP
Our surgery has a Practice manager and 2-3 receptionists on each day. Our patient files are computerised using Best Practice software. Hotdoc is used for online bookings and recalls. We are a fully accredited practice with accreditation due again in October 2019.
NURSING SERVICES
On most week day consulting sessions we have 2 nurses available; One RN and one EN. OurRN is qualified in pap smears, Diabetic education and contraceptive insertion and removal. All nurses are trained in spirometry and audiometry.
ALLIED HEALTH SERVICES
A full time Psychologist consults from our practice.
SPECIALIST SERVICES
Cairns city has a full range of specialist services within a short drive of the surgery.
DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES
Pathology, Chemist, Podiatrist, Physiotherapist and Dentist are all located in our building complex. Aboriginal health service is located next door. X-ray facilities are a 5 minute drive away.
OTHER CLINICAL SERVICES
Edmonton Family Medical Centre also offers Sports medicine, Skin cancer surgery, Allergy Management and desensitisation.
PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS
Our Practice is located in an old semi-rural area that has seen major redevelopment in recent years and is now a vibrant suburb for young families. We have a mix of both families and elderly. High proportion of low income, single parent family, ATSI, migrant and pensioners. Tropical and infectious diseases are common in North Queensland.
BILLING ARRANGEMENTS
Bulk bulling. (Private Billing for work/Drivers/Insurance medicals.)
PATIENT FLOWS
Standard appointments are 10min, Long appointments 20mins. Doctors see between 5-6 patients per hour. We are currently booked out 3 days in advance.
TOWN/SUBURB FACILITIES
Edmonton is a southern suburb of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland. It has a laid back lifestyle with plenty of tourist activities from the Reef to the Rainforest. Median house price in southern suburbs is between $330,000- $400,000. The southern suburbs have a mix of both public and private primary and secondary schools. There are numerous shopping centres nearby and Cairns has an excellent choice of restaurants and cafés. The region has walking and cycling tracks and is popular with adventure and Sports tourists.
TOURIST INFORMATION
Great Barrier Reef and Tropical rainforest surround us. Sports Tourism plays a large role in Far North Queensland. Beaches to the North and the South are an hour away by car. Water parks and movie theatres are within a 15 min drive.
SKILLS OR INTERESTS SOUGHT
Procedural and women’s health skills an advantage but not essential.

CONTRACT TERMS
Preferred hours are Monday to Friday 8am-5pm. A regular afternoon/morning off each week can be negotiated. Will be required to work 1 or 2 Saturday mornings per month. May be required to do one day per month nursing home visit. There is NO on call.
Rate of pay is 65-70% of billings.
LOCUM TERMS
Return flights, accommodation and car provided.
