Surgery Overview:

PlantMed have a vacancy for a GP at our innovative, award-winning medicinal cannabis clinic in Brisbane. PlantMed is owned and operated by Australian-trained doctors, including leading Cannabinoid Clinician Dr John Teh, and specialises in Cannabinoid Medicine and integrated health practices. Our Medical Director John Teh has been working in cannabinoid medicine since its legalisation in Australia for medicinal purposes in 2016. He is one of the leading educators and authorised prescribers of cannabis medicine in Australia. He is passionate about medical education and provides extensive initial and ongoing training to all PlantMed doctors. Our doctors work in conjunction with each patient’s team of doctors and health professionals to incorporate Medicinal Cannabis as an adjunct treatment to alleviate symptoms and improve patient treatment outcomes. PlantMed doctors are able to prescribe all Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved cannabis medicines, ensuring a range of treatment options best suited to each patient’s condition and desired treatment outcome. PlantMed welcomes patient referrals from all General Practitioners, and all other Medical Specialists who feel their patients may benefit from Medicinal Cannabis treatment. Our team of doctors conduct consultations at our clinic at Eagle Farm, Queensland, which is a 15-minute drive from the Brisbane CBD. PlantMed doctors enjoy experiencing an emerging and interesting aspect of medicine, and working closely with the patient’s specialists across a variety of disciplines such as Neurology, Pain Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Paediatrics, Gastroenterology and Psychiatry. Since opening PlantMed in February 2019, patient demand has increased 10-fold, so doctors joining our team are required for a minimum of 2 days per week, with an option to increase to full-time if desired.

Job Description:

PlantMed is looking for doctors and GPs (VR or non-VR) that are interested in the use of prescription medicinal cannabinoids. The role involves consulting and prescribing of medicinal cannabis for TGA/Department of Health-approved conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, chemotherapy side-effects and PTSD. The position would suit a Doctor happy to work a minimum of 2 days per week with the option of building quickly to full time if desired. PlantMed places a strong emphasis on education and full training & ongoing support will be provided by our Medical Director - Dr John Teh. The role involves consulting at our practice at Eagle Farm, Queensland and some consultations are provided via telemedicine (all billed privately). We are cognizant that this is emerging medicine, and Australian research activity has only become more serious since the Australian federal and state governments legalized its use and cultivation for medicinal purposes in 2016 (mostly in the major children’s hospitals but also now in several major Universities). Medicinal cannabis is an exciting and interesting area of medicine and the experience of prescribing specialists and GPs for specific patient groups has been very positive. PlantMed is a multi-doctor private billing practice with a professional, friendly team. Remuneration is guaranteed at $130 per hour or 65% of billings, whichever is greater. Minimum Qualifications: MBBS Medical Registration with AHPRA.

Surgery Layout:

PlantMed has spacious, pleasant consulting rooms on two levels of our building with room to expand into other areas of the premises. Consulting rooms have large windows offering plenty of natural light. We have ample onsite parking for doctors and patients. Rooms and toilets are wheelchair accessible. Pleasant waiting room with a relaxing atmosphere. Patients enjoy a cup of tea or cool drink on arrival. Friendly, professional reception staff.

Clinical Services:

PlantMed doctors accept all patient referrals in the area of Cannabis Medicine only. Our doctors enjoy long initial consults with patients, to deeply understand their medical history and reason for referral to PlantMed, as well as establish excellent rapport. We work in conjunction with the patient’s treating Medical Specialist and General Practitioner to help gauge the patient’s suitability for medicinal cannabis, track patient progress, track symptom relief, medication interactions, and overall patient wellbeing. Our administration staff help our doctors initiate and follow-up the patient’s application to the TGA for their prescription approval. We have developed an excellent relationship with the TGA in this regard. We keep the patient’s referring medical specialist up to date on the progress of the patient's Governmental (TGA) approval (patient’s SAS -B approval progress) and their medication titration. There is growing evidence that Medicinal Cannabis can benefit patients for a range of clinical conditions including: Epilepsy, Chronic Pain, Multiple Sclerosis, Palliative Care, Cancer treatment induced nausea, appetite loss and sleep disturbance, PTSD and Autism. All clinical services are provided face to face at our premises at Eagle Farm, Queensland. Some telemedicine consultations occur, if patients have difficulty traveling to Eagle Farm.

Dr John Teh, our Medical Director is available for advice or in-clinic full-time. There are typically 2 doctors working in the clinic at a time, and 1-2 administration/reception staff. The practice is growing rapidly, so more doctors will be working each day with each passing month. Initial appointments are approximately 45 minutes’ duration and prescription repeat/medication titration appointments are approximately 15-20 minutes long. PlantMed is located 15 minutes from the Brisbane CBD so is in a Metropolitan Area, not an area of Health Workforce Shortage/Area of Need.

Medicare Status:

RA1 Major City

Treatment Room:

Our clinical services are not procedurally based and therefore we do not require a treatment room. Choice of comfortable consulting rooms.

Surgery Billing:

We are a fully Private billing practice. Consultations (except telemedicine) are eligible for Medicare rebates for Doctors with GP Vocational Registration (VR). Initial consultations (approximately 45 minutes plus approximately 15 minutes’ paperwork) are charged at $250. Follow-up consultations (15-20 minutes) are charged at $80.

Circumstances:

We are a new and growing practice with large and increasing patient demand. Cannabinoid medicine is an emerging and interesting aspect of medical practice. Since the Australian Government legalised the import and local production of cannabis for medicinal purposes in 2016, patient demand has been growing rapidly. PlantMed has emerged as a leader in medicinal cannabis clinical services and has already established a strong reputation for its quality and integrity of practice.
