SURGERY OVERVIEW

Miami Village Medical Practice opened in its current form, fully renovated and newly-equipped, in March 2013.  Dr John Houston, who has been practising in the area since 1988, moved his practice to the village at that time to join RN Lianne Shiell who had been the practice nurse in its previous form. John was joined by Dr Kate Taylor in 2014 and together they have forged a strong, traditional family practice.

Our practice enjoys a diverse demographic, providing for the elderly pioneers of the Miami and Burleigh area, through to the middle-aged, young families and their children. We offer doctors a vast scope of practice with antenatal care, paediatrics, general medicine, women’s and men’s health, minor surgery and trauma, and skin cancer management.  

The nursing staff are widely experienced with proficiency in midwifery, childhood immunisation, cervical screening, wound management and general treatment room activities. The practice boasts a fully-equipped treatment room with state-of-the-art facilities. Our reception staff have been hand-picked for their sensitivity to patients’ and doctors’ needs, and their excellent reception desk skills.

The Practice is managed by Rick McKee, who has over twenty years’ experience as a medical practice owner and manager. Rickworks tirelessly to maintain the smooth, efficient running of the practice.  He has particular expertise in maintaining ‘cutting edge’ technology with computers, medical software, internet etc, and keeping the practice up-to-date with modern electronic direct billing and banking practices.  He recently upgraded the practice decor to create a fresh, modern ambience. 

The practice is located within the Miami Shopping Village, a busy boutique centre with a unique community feel.  There is plenty of parking, with a variety of other retail outlets to complement the appeal of the medical practice, including pharmacy, veterinary surgery, BWS liquor outlet, hairdresser, butcher, IGA, various eateries, coffee shops, and petrol station.

Patients frequently compliment the staff on the friendly and welcoming nature of the practice. Our staff show a genuine interest in the welfare and lives of the patients.

 

SURGERY OWNERSHIP

The practice is owned and managed by Rick McKee. Rick is an experienced medical practice owner and manager. Rick has over twenty years’ experience in this field and operates another large medical practice at Elanora. Rick has a Diploma in Business Management, and a Diploma in Professional Practice Management (UNEP). He is a member of Australian Association of Practice Managers and a member of the RACGP.

Our practice is well-managed and friendly. Doctors have full autonomy to make decisions regarding the way they practise, the way the practice is managed, and the resources they require.  Doctors are encouraged to create their own style of practice, and feel free to embrace and utilise the facility in any way that best suits them. 

 

OUR DOCTORS 

 

Dr John Houston

John graduated from Monash University, Melbourne Victoria in 1985.

He has practised medicine in the Burleigh Heads - Miami area since 1988.

He enjoys all aspects of general practice with special interests in musculoskeletal disorders, diabetes, skin cancer and minor surgical procedures.

John's wife Janine is an experienced midwife at Gold Coast University Hospital, with whom John often confers on obstetric matters related to his practice.

 

Dr Kate Taylor

Kate graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in UK in 1998 then travelled to NZ where she met her husband, Fraser, and completed her GP training.

Kate and her husband relocated permanently to the Gold Coast in 2013. Kate has 3 children, 2 of whom are at primary school.

Kate enjoys all aspects of General Practice, but her special interests are Women’s Health and Paediatrics.

SURGERY ROUTINE

Consulting Hours are Monday to Friday: 7:30am – 5:00pm (we can easily increase to later if interested in starting late)

Dr John Houston consults 5 days per week: 7:30am – 4:00pm

Dr Kate Taylor consults 3 days per week: 9:00am – 3:30pm

Appointments are generally10 or 15 minutes (or longer) at doctors’ discretion

QML Pathology is open daily from 7:30am – 11:00am
