SURGERY OVERVIEW

Avalon Family Medical Practice is very much a family oriented medical practice that has been caring for patients in Avalon for over 60 years. We are located on the edge of Avalon village with some great cafes and shops. Our surgery is less than 1km from Avalon Beach and close to Pharmacies, Pathology and other allied health services as well as a number of local schools. Avalon is serviced by a regular bus service, providing transport to the city and other hubs such as Mona Vale, Dee Why, Manly and Warringah Mall. We are only 15 mins from Mona Vale hospital and 25 minutes from the new Northern Beaches Hospital, which is due to open in 2019.

SURGERY OWNERSHIP

Our Principal GP, Dr Jeff Cavanaugh and his wife Claire have owned the practice since 1994.

SURGERY LAYOUT

Our surgery has 4 rooms, one of which is used as our nurse’s room and the other 3 as GP consulting rooms. Three of our rooms have up-down beds, all have good lighting and a sink. We have a centrally located reception desk, 2 waiting areas, a medical store/sterilisation room and a kitchen/ staff room. The premises is a modern, purpose built building, with ramps for wheelchair patient access. We have a staff bath room complete with shower, for sports minded GP’s and we have a wheel chair friendly patient WC. We have adequate on-site parking and we are also within 40 metres of a large council car park.

SURGERY FACILITIES

Our surgery is open from Mondays to Fridays (8.45am until 6pm) and Saturdays (8.45am to 12 noon). Our surgery is covered by the national home doctor service whenever we are closed.

We have 2 or 3 GP’s seeing patients on most days, along with our practice nurse. GPs share the Saturday morning roster on a rotational basis.

Avalon Family Medical Practice is fully accredited with AGPAL. We normally schedule 15 minute appointments, are a mixed billing practice and fully computerised, using Pracsoft and MD3.

TREATMENT ROOM

Avalon Family Medical Practice has a one bed treatment room. We sterilise our kits in house, rather than use disposable kits.

Our surgery has an ECG machine and a sphygmomanometer, both of which plug into a PC via USB cable. We also have a defibrillator.

ADMIN SETUP

We have 2 senior reception staff that job share during the day from 8.30am to 4pm and 2 casual reception staff who work afternoons, evenings (3.30pm to close) and Saturday mornings. We have a part time practice manager, who works 3 days a week. Our IT support comes via a long term contract with a local technician.

We have a surgery server, where all software is loaded and we operate 6 other computers that run our admin and clinical programs. We are fully computerised and have been since 2009.

NURSING SERVICES

Our RN works school hours, 4 days a week and we have an additional casual RN who provides backup on Fridays and during holidays. Our RN’s do ECGs, spirometry, ear syringing, vaccinations (particularly children) and wound care. They are qualified to do women’s health checks and conduct INR’s for patients. They work under the GP’s, not independently.

ALLIED HEALTH SERVICES

We have a psychologist who works 1 or 2 sessions a week

on a room and part admin basis.

DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Diagnostic imaging is available in Mona Vale (15 mins away) and pathology services are located in Avalon (150 metres away).

OTHER CLINICAL SERVICES

Our principal GP conducts skin cancer screening and performs minor excisions of skin lesions and skin cancers as required.

Our principal GP also looks after patients in 3 local nursing homes.

PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS

Our patients visit us from birth to grave. We have a spike of young children and young parents and then a spike of older patients from early retirement age onwards. But all age groups are well represented on our books.

BILLING ARRANGEMENTS

We are a mixed billing practice: Our charges are $80 for an item 23 and $140 for an item 36. We charge a discounted fee of $60 for an item 23 and $100 for an item 36 for HCC holders and students 10 years to 18 years. Children under 10 and full aged pensioners and veterans affairs patients are bulk billed.

We bulk bill item numbers 721/723 and 703/705 and the mental health item plan numbers, as well

as excisions. This is because we believe these item numbers are fairly remunerated by the HIC.

PATIENT FLOWS

Every morning one of our GPs is allotted to run a “quick clinic” for 1 hour between 9am and 10am. This is for children’s acute illnesses, repeat scripts and referrals for all patients. The GP typically sees between 5 and 10 patients at this walk-in clinic. Other than that we run on 15 minute appointments, with each GP deciding if they need a catch up appointment during a 4 hour session.

TOWN/SUBURB FACILITIES

Avalon is a beach side village suburb with great beaches & waterways, numerous cafes & restaurants and good sporting facilities.

It has a collection of village shops plus a petrol station and large supermarket.

We have 4 pharmacies, a number of allied health providers and Douglas Hanley Moir have rooms as well.

Avalon has 2 public primary schools, a high school and one private primary school. There are also numerous kindergartens available.

Public transport facilities include a main bus route to the city (1hr 10mins) as well as other centres such as Mona Vale, Dee Why, Manly and Warringah Mall.

TOURIST INFORMATION

We are near Palm Beach where Home and Away is filmed. We have great Beaches, so every school holiday we have an influx of visitors who want a great beach holiday, this means the surgery stays busy over the holiday periods. Air B&B has changed the face of this and many locals rent out their homes for these periods and get great rental returns.

SKILLS OR INTERESTS SOUGHT

We are looking for a GP with Women’s and Children’s health interests as well as the usual general medicine skills.

CIRCUMSTANCES

One of our current GPs is moving to a practice nearer to her home.

CONTRACT TERMS

We are offering an Associateship, which we would be happy to extend to a partnership after 1 year if the Associate was suitable. We take a 30% of gross fee management fee from our Associate’s.

GENERAL COMMENTS

We are a small, family run, general practice with a very stable complement of staff. We generally keep our staff and Associate’s for years and we offer a friendly collegiate work environment.
