NURSING SERVICES

The Clinic has employed 1 Practice Nurse who is a Registered Nurse and works 20 hours per week. The Practice Nurse provides the following services; GPMP’s, cycle of care reviews, pre-employment medicals, audiometry and spirometry, assistance with minor procedures.

HOSPITAL SERVICES

The Clinic has a fee for service arrangement with the Streaky Bay Hospital, where doctors provide a 24 hour emergency on call and inpatient services to the hospital. Remuneration will be reflective of this arrangement.

South Australia through the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency has in place a SAVES system https://www.ruraldoc.com.au/saves (more information is available by clicking on this link) which the Streaky Bay Hospital has the ability to access. Statistics on emergency and on call services provided in the past 12 months can be provided upon enquiry.

The hospital is located within walking distance of the clinic. It has 10 acute beds, 9 high level aged care and 15 low level aged care, located in the Elmhaven hostel adjacent to the hospital.

Rounds usually occur 9am – 10am weekdays and Saturday mornings (dependent on inpatient requirements).

The Clinic is located within the Community Services Building which is occupied by Country Health Connect who provide the following allied health services;

SPECIALIST SERVICES

We have a visiting Psychiatry and Gastroenterologists who visits monthly.

Various specialist services are available in Ceduna (120km), Port Lincoln (320km), Whyalla (350km) or Adelaide (720km).

DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Streaky Bay Hospital Provides a limited radiology service through Repat radiology. Non Urgent radiology is referred to either Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Whyalla or Adelaide (distances vary from 100-700km).

OTHER CLINICAL SERVICES

Doctors can perform excisional biopsies and minor procedures at the Hospital in a booked session with assistance of the Practice Nurse.

PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS

The current township population is around 1200 persons, and the district has 2000. The community has a varied demographic of farming, small business and aquaculture. There are many young families and also a large growing retiree population. The last Census data showed the median age of 42 which was a 2 year increase from the previous census data.

BILLING ARRANGEMENTS

The Clinic provides a combination of private and bulk billing dependent on services delivery, fee structure can be provided on enquiry.

PATIENT FLOWS

Patients are currently allocated 15 minute time slots (current locum arrangements). Previous doctors were allocated 10 minute time slots. With one locum doctor present, we are currently booked one to two days in advance. Patients are triaged when the clinic is booked out, and if required slotted in between existing bookings.

TOWN/SUBURB FACILITIES

Streaky Bay is the business hub and service centre for a district of approximately 2000 people, agricultural production is the primary industry, with tourism, fishing and aquaculture. The township of Streaky Bay is a vibrant town, with local café, bakery and hotel, 2 supermarkets, hairdressers, hardware store, pharmacy, newsagent, post office, liquor store, 3 service stations, mechanics and more. The town has an area school, kindergarten and private child care facilities. There are a number of Sport, Recreation and art opportunities within the district.

SKILLS OR INTERESTS SOUGHT

the following is a general guide to what is required for a GP for our level of clinic;

  • Minimum four years of recent general practice.

  • Demonstrated and current emergency medicine skills and experience.

  • MBBS medical degree or equivalent

  • Vocational registration (Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and/or with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine) or General medical registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Able to gain Country Health SA LHN credentials as a General Practitioner in the clinical domain of GP Medicine (emergency medicine) for the Streaky Bay Hospital

CIRCUMSTANCES

The Clinic was previously privately owned, the owner of the Clinic retired and a few months prior to his retirement the resident doctor tendered his resignation. Council were offered the purchase of the clinic following the impending retirement and potential closure of the clinic. The clinic is currently operating as “was” with Locum Doctors providing clinical services. The retention of the practice manager and practice nurse has ensured the clinic continues to operate with minimal disruption.

GENERAL COMMENTS

Whilst the Clinic ownership has undertaken change, with further changes possible, Council believes the retention of existing staff, services and front of house operations has ensured that a service continues to be provided to the Community, with little disruption.

This continuum of service will ensure that incoming resident doctors can easily transition, and may provide other opportunities.

SURGERY OVERVIEW

The District Council of Streaky Bay, owners of the Streaky Bay Medical Clinic, are seeking to recruit two full-time General Practitioners.  The successful candidates will have recent general and emergency medicine experience.  Successful candidates will provide practice consultations, and medical services to the Streaky Bay Hospital, including 24-hour emergency on-call and inpatient services.

The Streaky Bay Medical Clinic provides high quality community-based healthcare services to the community of Streaky Bay, on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.  The Clinic is a modern facility with a full range of visiting specialist and allied health services, including psychiatry, gerontology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology.  The Clinic is supported by experienced practice staff.

The Clinic is located within the Community Services Building, adjacent to the Hospital, and a short 10 minute walk to the towns CBD.

SURGERY OWNERSHIP

The Clinic Business has recently been purchased by the District Council of Streaky Bay (was previously privately owned). 

SURGERY LAYOUT

The Clinic is located within the Community Services Building. The clinic has a large seated waiting area that is shared with Country Health Connect, reception area, practice managers office, 2 consulting/treatment rooms, store room, is air-conditioned and each consulting room has plenty of natural lighting and sea views.

SURGERY FACILITIES

Our Clinic Consulting Hours are Monday to Friday: 10am – 5.30pm (negotiable).

Previously the practice was operating with 1.5 doctors with room to expand to 2 doctors. The practice is currently operating with 1 locum doctor.

TREATMENT ROOM

The Clinic has two consulting rooms each with an examination/minor treatment room. Most procedures are undertaken at the hospital Outpatients Department. Procedures such as cryotherapy, ear syringes, are completed at the clinic.

ADMIN SETUP

The Clinic has in place a full time Practice Manager, with one casual receptionist who is utilised on an as needs basis.

The clinic uses Pracsoft and Medical Director, and is accredited for 3 years under the RACGP 4th Edition Standards.
