Tumut Family Medical Centre was established in May 2003 by Dr Tony Wilson and his wife Janette in a two-roomed house, which in 2005 was expanded into 4 consulting rooms and a two bed procedure/nurses room.

In May 2018 Dr Paul Mara took over ownership of the business and in April 2019 the business moved to a more design specific premises.

We are located just off the main street of Tumut, with all the essential services such as banking, shopping and restaurants within only a matter of steps.

Since its inception our practice has been known as a procedural medical centre. Previous incumbents (GP obstetricians and GP anaesthetists) have had changes in their directions and we are looking to re-build and strengthen these services.

Our surgery is affiliated with the University of New South Wales Clinical School and we routinely mentor medical students and student nurses throughout the year. We have also hosted James Cook University and University of Notre Dame medical students from time to time.  We are an accredited registrar training practice and have had training registrars working with us for over 15 years.

The principal GP/owner is Dr Paul Mara who has lived and worked in the district for more than 30 years. In addition, he has had a wealth of experience in rural areas and held executive positions in both the Rural Doctors’ Association of NSW and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia. He is also the founder and Managing Director of GPA Accreditation, which accredits 2000 practices nationwide. Dr Mara is a passionate advocate for GP services to rural communities.

We have 3 (male) GPs working differing part-time hours for a total of 2.6 FTE. They all have rural experience and enjoy working in circumstances where their workload is varied and diverse.

Tumut is rated an RA2 (Inner Regional) location. It is not a DWS.

Tumut Family Medical Centre has 8 consultation rooms, each with individual reverse cycle air conditioning. We have 2 large patient waiting areas, one of which is child friendly and has space for children to play with toys provided. Our one bay treatment room has full time nursing cover. Visiting specialists and allied health staff share the use of our consulting rooms on a sessional basis.

Our surgery hours are Monday to Friday: 8.30am – 5.30pm.

We currently have 1 doctor in the building on most days, but in the past we have had as many as 4 and still been fully booked each day. There is demand to accommodate at least 4 doctors into the future.

We normally schedule 10-15 minute appointments for patients and our doctors would see 4 – 5 patients per hour, on average. Our doctors normally consult from 9.30am – 1.00pm, take one hour for lunch, and then 2.00pm – 5.00pm.

We have a one bed treatment room, complete with: ECG, Hyfercator, Mole mate computer system, Audiometry, Spirometry, ear tray, eye tray, Algi Brush. We perform minor surgical procedures regularly and have the appropriate instruments and sterilisation equipment available. We sterilise all of our equipment as per national guidelines and provide full-time nursing support.

Our surgery has a Practice Manager who works 0.8 FTE and experienced reception staff with a wealth of knowledge. We are fully computerised and paperless for patient files, using both MediRecords and Best Practice medical software.

We are a fully accredited surgery and have been since our inception. Our current certificate is with GPA Accreditation and is valid until June 2019.

As well as being able to provide competent and efficient support for our GPs, our team of Registered Nurses has training and accreditation in a number of areas. They are able to provide immunisation and women’s health services, PAP smears and patient education on a wide range of issues. We also have available a Nurse who specialises in chronic disease care planning.

We currently have a Mental Health social worker attending the clinic once a week (by appointment)

We have a number of visiting services, including an Orthopaedic Surgeon from Wagga Wagga who attends our clinic once a month. It is likely that the range of visiting service providers will expand in the near future.

Pathology, Xray, CT and US diagnostic services are a short 20m walk away, as part of the ‘Connection Arcade’. Blood collection facilities are also available in the treatment room.

Minor surgical procedures and venesection are available in house.

Our current surgery database shows more than 5000 active patients with an average age of 34 years. We pride ourselves however, in caring for members of our community from the” cradle to the grave”.

Tumut currently has an 80 bed nursing home and a 30 residential aged car facility. There is also a new retirement settlement under construction. An announcement has also been made, and planning has begun, for a new state of the art hospital facility for our community.

With the announcement of the new Snowy Hydro II Scheme we are expecting a significant population increase during the next 5-10 years. The biggest employer in the area is the timber industry with VISY pulp and paper mills located between Tumut and Adelong and AKD softwoods plants.

We generally have a 60-40 bulk bill to private bill ratio for our patients. All concession card holders and children are bulk billed. Our current standard consultation fee is $70.

With two doctors the surgery has been seeing approximately 420 patients per week, usually at a rate of 4-5 per hour.  We keep up to 12 appointments locked until 8.30 each morning for “book on the day” appointments.

The town has a population of approximately 6500 and the total shire population is 15000. Wagga Wagga is 1 hour away. Canberra and Albury are also an easy 2 hour drive away.

A dedicated, kind family doctor with an interest in VMO and emergency medicine skills with or without anaesthetics or obstetrics

The Tumut Family Medical Centre has a history of providing obstetric and anaesthetic services to the local hospital over many years. The surgery has recently changed ownership and we are looking to both consolidate our general practice role as well as to continue to offer procedural-level GP services for the community and area.

A fulltime position for the right candidate is available, with a negotiable contract of surgery and hospital generated income, depending on skills set. Visits to the local Aged Care facilities will be required, on an as needed basis. Teaching is available with medical students from UNSW twice a year.

In addition, candidates may choose to be part of the Visiting Medical Officer staff at the Tumut District Hospital. The hospital is a 30 bed, peer grouped D1 facility with active surgical and maternity units, providing emergency, medical, surgical and maternity services to our surrounding community. A full range of community health services are also available. The VMO on call roster is generally a 1:6 responsibility and there is always a 2nd on call doctor for support. Tumut Hospital is linked via video conferencing to Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital as our main referral Hospital. A helicopter Pad is situated on the hospital grounds for NETS and Careflight transfers to Canberra (25 mins away by helicopter). The Labor Government has proposed a $50m rebuild of Tumut Hospital and construction work is due to start at the end of 2019.

Whilst we are recruiting a permanent doctor, we would be happy to consider long term locum cover. A locum to permanent transition would also be considered for doctors contemplating a longer term commitment. Being a small rural practice, we are not able to supply a car, but we would be willing to negotiate accommodation and travel options.
