SURGERY OVERVIEW
Tumut Family Medical Centre was established in May 2003 by Dr Tony Wilson and his wife Janette in a two-roomed house, which in 2005 was expanded into 4 consulting rooms and a two bed procedure/nurses room.
In May 2018 Dr Paul Mara took over ownership of the business and in April 2019 the business moved to a more design specific premises.
We are located just off the main street of Tumut, with all the essential services such as banking, shopping and restaurants within only a matter of steps.
Since its inception our practice has been known as a procedural medical centre. Previous incumbents (GP obstetricians and GP anaesthetists) have had changes in their directions and we are looking to re-build and strengthen these services.
Our surgery is affiliated with the University of New South Wales Clinical School and we routinely mentor medical students and student nurses throughout the year. We have also hosted James Cook University and University of Notre Dame medical students from time to time. We are an accredited registrar training practice and have had training registrars working with us for over 15 years.
SURGERY OWNERSHIP
The principal GP/owner is Dr Paul Mara who has lived and worked in the district for more than 30 years. In addition, he has had a wealth of experience in rural areas and held executive positions in both the Rural Doctors’ Association of NSW and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia. He is also the founder and Managing Director of GPA Accreditation, which accredits 2000 practices nationwide. Dr Mara is a passionate advocate for GP services to rural communities.

Visits to the local Aged Care facilities will be required, on an as needed basis. Teaching is available with medical students from UNSW twice a year.
